Juvenile Justice: "I am in favor of the age of criminal responsibility at 16," says Gérald Darmanin

This is a new setback for the government. The Constitutional Council on Thursday censored part of the law aimed at toughening juvenile justice . This law, introduced by former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, was adopted a month ago by Parliament and included several provisions to more firmly hold minors and their parents accountable in the event of an offense.
The Constitutional Council rejected the introduction of immediate appearances for minors and, in a second decision, opposed judging those over 16 as adults.
A decision that the Minister of Justice returned to this Friday in the special program for the 20th anniversary of Les Grandes Gueules on RMC:
“I supported Gabriel Attal's text; he was right to propose it. What the Constitutional Council said was that since the age of criminal responsibility is 18, we cannot take measures without profoundly changing our constitution. I am in favor of the age of criminal responsibility being 16. I am, and I have already spoken out in favor of this, in favor of a profound constitutional change. And if that is done, then we will be able to take the firm measures that the National Assembly voted for,” assured Gérald Darmanin.
